Christmas Staycation

One of my goals each year is to travel out of state at least once a month.  This year I made that goal all the way through November.  In January we went to Brianhead, Utah, February Puerto Vallarta Mexico, March Denver, Colorado, April Los Angeles, California, May San Francisco, California, June Springfield, Missouri, July Parker, Arizona (or hell on Earth with temperatures in the 115’s), August Long Beach and Lake Arrowhead, California, September Denver, Colorado, October New York City and Disneyland, November Scottsdale, Arizona and Parker Dam, California. As December approached I knew with the hustle and bustle of the holidays getting out of town this month was not going to be impossible.  So when the UNLV Runnin Rebels game against Illinois was scheduled to be played at the MGM Grand Garden Arena instead of the Thomas & Mack Center, because the National Finals Rodeo is in town, I had the perfect solution for a December get away, a Vegas staycation.

This is one of the greatest things about living in Vegas, when you want a little get away you can head to the Strip for a night and feel like you went somewhere else.  As season ticket holders for UNLV Men’s basketball we knew that the game on Saturday night was going to be a the MGM, so I started watching room rates.  On Saturday morning I got onto MGM Resorts website and signed in with my M Life Rewards card and found a great last minute room rate at the Monte Carlo Hotel and Casino.  The room rate was $66 for the night and I had received a $50 gift card for my birthday, so it was the perfect price for a Staycation. (An Uber fair roundtrip would have been $50-$60)

We headed down on Saturday afternoon and our room wasn’t ready when we arrived, so we walked over to The Park to check things out and have a cocktail and a quick bite to eat while we waited for the text from the hotel that our room was ready.  We decided to check out Beerhaus.  It was decorated for Christmas and we had plenty of Illinois fans in town to banter with about the evening’s game.  The cheese lover that I am tried the hand cut fries and beer cheese as a snack and it was delicious.

We got the text that our room was ready, so we headed back over to the Monte Carlo and picked up our room key.  We were treated with one of the newly renovated Park MGM Strip View rooms.  The view of City Center was really beautiful.  The room’s simplistic decor was updated and comfortable.

We headed back out to The Strip and headed over to the New York New York Casino and enjoyed a couple of beers at the Times Square Piano Bar.  It is always fun to have a little sing along.

Next stop was the MGM Grand!  We love to play Penny Slots and get a few free drinks while we play.  We found a Willy Wonka machine and had a good time playing and getting our free drinks.

One of our favorite restaurants in the MGM Grand is Emeril’s New Orleans Fish House .  We have been going there for special occasions for years.  We weren’t in the mood for a full meal, so we sat in the bar area and had the Fall River Clam Chowder, which is one of the best clam chowders around and Emeril’s Barbecued Shrimp.  It was the perfect amount of food and satisfied our Emeril’s cravings.

We finished in the perfect amount of time and walked over to the MGM Grand Arena with the other UNLV Runnin Rebel fans.  We ran into some people we know and got to catch up before game time.  The game was exciting and it was great WIN for us!!!!

After the game it was fun to mingle with the cowboys and cowgirls that were back from the rodeo before we headed back to our hotel.

The bed at the Monte Carlo was super comfortable and we slept like we were at home.  It really was nice to just walk back to our hotel room instead of having to catch an Uber home.

Las Vegas never disappoints and even though it’s your vacation, my home I always enjoy a good staycation.
