Friends Don’t Let Friends NOT Ride Share

Yesterday when I turned on the morning news there was a horrible “Breaking News” story that a 16 year old driver had been hit and killed in an automobile accident.  The facts developed throughout the day and the cause of the accident was a drunk driver rear ended him while he was stopped at a red light on his way to school.  As a mother this is the worst nightmare imaginable, you send your kids out the door to go to school and they never make it home, because of someone’s reckless actions.

Drinking and driving in Las Vegas is a hard battle, this is literally a 24 hour town.  Casinos, bars and stores don’t close, so alcohol is sold 24 hours a day.  People work many different shifts in this town and some people get off at midnight and go after work for drinks and don’t finish until others are getting up to start their day.  HOWEVER there is no reason why anyone in this 24 hour town should be drinking and getting behind the wheel of a vehicle.

I am not a perfect person and I have drank and drove home many times that I should not have.  I have also been arrested and charged with a DUI.  I have no excuse for anytime I got behind the wheel of a vehicle and drove after I was drinking, but over the last few years ride sharing companies have made is so much easier to get home after a night of drinking versus using a taxi cab.

I am a HUGE fan of Uber and Lyft!!!!  If I know that I am going to be drinking, I am to the point now where I just leave my car at home and take Uber or Lyft to my destination and back home.  On Super Bowl Sunday I was going to a party literally a few blocks from home and I took an Uber to the party.  The driver did not mind that I had my case of beer and tray of appetizers with me, she was just happy that I was being responsible and not drinking and driving.

Taxis in Las Vegas can be pricey, the wait can be long and the cab drivers generally do not like going off The Strip to take people to the suburbs.  But now there are Uber and Lyft, the price of the rides are at least half the cost and I have never waited more than 15 minutes for a ride.  It is a WIN, WIN, WIN to use ride sharing companies when drinking, you are not on the streets potentially putting yourself or innocent people in harms way and it is so much cheaper than getting a DUI.

Even if you don’t plan ahead and have your vehicle somewhere and you start drinking, just leave the car there until the next day and take an Uber or Lyft home.  Heck I have left my vehicle at the bar around the corner and then taken an Uber or Lyft back the next day to pick up my car.  I mean $5 for a ride isn’t going to break the bank and if it is, maybe you shouldn’t be out drinking!

If you have never used a ride share company, I hope the next time you are out having drinks you decide to use one instead of getting behind the wheel.  You can find great discounts for new Uber and Lyft accounts for your first ride too!!!!  Here is a link to my Uber discount for first time riders:
