I have heard about cyber bullying and social media trolls and have been lucky enough over the last few years to not have been a victim to one. That was until the other day! I know as a blogger and someone who is on social media a lot you have to have thick skin and I do for the most party, but I have to draw a line at name calling.
I have read about cyber bullies and trolls calling bloggers fat or ugly and find that so appalling. I do not understand how a complete stranger can be mean and hurtful to someone they don’t know and call them names.
For the most part I refrain from getting involved in “deep” discussions on social media, but last week a friend started a conversation about inequality and that is a subject that I am passionate about, so I joined in the conversation with my positive thoughts on the subject. To my surprise I was called a “moron” by a social media troll. The person who posted the conversation did not know this person, I do not know this person , so he is someone trolling social media to find people to call names and put them down.
My husband does not understand why it bothers me so much, but it does. And the reason it does is because it is NOT okay for people to hide behind social media to bully people. It is NOT okay for people to call people names. It is NOT okay for people to be hateful. I am a 38 year old woman, who is confident, educated and understands social media trolls and bullies, but there are a lot of people who do not understand it and are affected by this very negatively. I want to use this experience to call these people out and let people that this has happened to know that it is not okay and that those people out there are hateful people that have no business being on social media spreading their hate.
And with that being said, I want to share with you one of my favorite quotes from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
In honor of Dr. King, spread love not hate!
